Short and long pull, mechanical and hydraulic, coaster brakes and anything to get you stopping on the dime! Bicycles come in all shapes and sizes and come with a variety of brakes. The most common types of brakes for bikes today are V-Brakes, Disc Brakes, Side Pull Calipers, BMX U-Brakes, and Hydraulic Brakes. V-Brakes are the most popular type of brakes used today, and are the most accessible. They form a ‘V’ shape and have superior stopping power. Disc Brakes provide superior stopping power and are usually found on mountain bikes. They are self-adjusting, weather-resistant, and don’t rely on a wheel rim’s contact surface as most other brakes do. Side Pull Calipers provide linear action and are easier to adjust than V-Brakes. They typically use a wire or noodle to actuate the brake pads, and are easy to install and maintain.
BMX U-Brakes are unique in their design and are found on BMX and trial bikes. They are often the lightest type of brakes and sit either side of the wheel. Hydraulic Brakes provide superior stopping power and modulation, and are best suited to off-road and mountain biking. They generally need to be installed by a qualified bike mechanic. No matter what brake you end up opting for, you are sure to have great stopping power and a nice ride.
